Activity 4.4 — Combustion of Carbon Compounds
NCERT Activity 4.4: Burn different carbon compounds and observe their flames. Discover why some burn clean and blue while others are yellow and sooty.
How To Perform
1
Burn a Candle
Light a candle (paraffin wax) and observe the yellow, sooty flame.
2
Light LPG Stove
Turn on the gas stove — observe the clean, blue flame of complete combustion.
3
Burn Acetylene
Burn acetylene and see the very sooty flame from its high carbon content.
4
Test for CO₂
Pass combustion gases through lime water to confirm CO₂ production.
5
Compare Flames
Understand why different compounds give different flame types.
⚠️ Safety Notes
- •Keep fire extinguisher nearby — open flames can be dangerous.
- •Carbon monoxide from incomplete combustion is poisonous — ensure ventilation.
- •Do not inhale combustion fumes directly.
- •Acetylene cylinders can explode — handle with extreme care.
