Activity 7.5 — Spore Formation in Rhizopus
NCERT Activity 7.5: Observe spore formation in Rhizopus (bread mould). Watch hyphae grow, sporangia form, spores release, and new mould grow from spores!
How To Perform
1
Observe Bread
View the moist bread with cottony white mould growing on it.
2
Hyphae Growth
See the thin filaments (hyphae) spread across the bread surface.
3
Sporangia Form
Bulbous spore cases develop at the tips of upright hyphae.
4
Spore Release
Sporangia rupture — thousands of lightweight spores disperse!
5
Spore Germination
Spores land on new bread and grow into new mould colonies.
⚠️ Safety Notes
- •Do not inhale mould spores — they can cause allergic reactions.
- •Dispose of mouldy bread in sealed bags.
- •Wash hands after handling mould specimens.
