Victor Meyer Test

Classical test: Different colored solutions for 1° (red), 2° (blue), 3° (colorless) alcohols.

How It Works

1

Three Unknown Alcohols

Tubes A, B, C contain 1°, 2°, and 3° alcohols.

2

Add PI₃ then AgNO₂

First converts alcohol to alkyl iodide, then to nitroalkane.

3

Observe Color

Red = 1° alcohol. Blue = 2° alcohol. Colorless = 3° alcohol.

Reaction Key

1° Alcohol:

Red color (nitroalkane → nitrous acid → red)

2° Alcohol:

Blue color (pseudonitrol formed)

3° Alcohol:

No color (does not give test)
